Local MP, Caroline Dinenage, is supporting Fairtrade Fortnight 2020. This year’s theme is ‘She Deserves Fairtrade’.
There have been many events across the country to celebrate the beginning of Fairtrade Fortnight (which runs from 24th February to 8th March), and there are many more lined up – including in the Gosport constituency.
This week, Caroline attended part of a Fairtrade Fortnight reception in Parliament, where she listened to a speech from Rosine Bekoine, a Fairtrade cocoa farmer, from the CAYAT Co-operative in Côte D’Ivoire. There were also speeches from Lord Mark Price, Chair of the Fairtrade Foundation and former Minister for Trade and Investment, as well as from Jemima Jewell, Interim Head of Corporate Responsibility at Waitrose & Partners.
Caroline said:
‘It was so interesting to hear the speech from Rosine Bekoine, a Fairtrade cocoa farmer, from the CAYAT Co-operative in Côte D’Ivoire, and to hear first-hand the benefits Fairtrade cooperatives can bring.
Fairtrade is such an important organisation - this is about better prices, decent working conditions, local sustainability, and fair terms of trade for farmers and workers in the developing world. I fully align myself with these goals, and I think it is important that we continue to support the Fairtrade initiative!’
