Local MP, Caroline Dinenage, has welcomed news that charities supporting armed forces personnel and veterans will receive a funding boost.
This week, Veterans Minister Johnny Mercer, announced charities can apply for funding from the £6 million pound pot if they work in 9 key areas that have been affected by the pandemic. Included in these areas are housing, bereavement, employment and mental and physical health.
The £6 million is just part of the £750 million pound package Chancellor, Rishi Sunak, announced would be dedicated to the charity sector last month.
Applications are now open and grants will be distributed through the Armed Forces Covenant Fund Trust, who have already received an additional £10 million in this Springs Budget, plus the £10 million annual government contribution and £3 million ringfenced for veterans affected by Covid-19.
Minister for Defence People and Veterans Johnny Mercer said:
“At such a difficult time I want to make sure our people, including those still serving, veterans, and their families, know they’re not alone.
“Military charities do a fantastic job in supporting this community and today’s important new investment will ensure that they have the funding they need to continue their brilliant efforts.”
David Richmond CBE, Director of the Office for Veterans’ Affairs, said:
“Charities play a vital role in supporting our veteran community by providing a wide range of support and services.
“It’s critically important that the government is providing support to them to allow essential services to continue during these difficult times and The Office for Veterans’ Affairs will continue to work closely with the charities to ensure the funding reaches those who need it most.”
Gosport has a proud and rich military history, with a high population of service personnel and veterans.
Support is available for forces personnel already on both a national and local level. The Government has two main platforms that have recently been launched, the Veterans’ Gateway – which provides 24 hour support via an app – and HeadFIT – an online tool for physical and mental health.
Caroline commented:
“Covid-19 has impacted everyone in the community and I know that many supporting charities have seen an increase in demand for their services.
“Forces charities provide incredible support for those who have dedicated their lives to our country, especially in an area like Gosport where we have such a strong military presence.
“I am pleased to see this dedicated funding pot and hope that organisations on our peninsular will apply to ensure they can keep supporting our community.”
